Povratne zamenice myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves: kad je objekat isti kao subjekat (I cut myself); u značenju „sam, bez pomoći“ (I fixed it myself) i by myself; izrazi enjoy yourself, help yourself, make yourself at home; glagoli koji u srpskom imaju „se“, a u engleskom nemaju povratnu zamenicu (feel, relax, meet, remember).

- Jednina: I → myself, you → yourself, he → himself, she → herself, it → itself. Množina: we → ourselves, you → yourselves, they → themselves. U jednini -self, u množini -selves.
- Objekat je isti kao subjekat
- Kad neko radi nešto samom sebi: „I cut myself on the paper.“ (Posekao / posekla sam se.), „The dog is scratching itself.“, „Be careful, don't hurt yourself!“
- Sam, bez pomoći
- Povratna zamenica može da znači „sam, bez ičije pomoći“: „Did you fix the bike yourself?“, „We planted these trees ourselves.“ Obično stoji na kraju rečenice.
- By myself — sam, bez društva
- „By myself“, „by herself“ … = sam, bez ikoga: „I went to the cinema by myself.“ (Išao / išla sam sam / sama u bioskop.), „My aunt likes travelling by herself.“
- Izrazi sa povratnom zamenicom
- enjoy yourself (lepo se provedi), help yourself (posluži se), make yourself at home (osećaj se kao kod kuće), introduce yourself (predstavi se), teach yourself (naučiti sam): „Help yourselves to some biscuits!“ — za više osoba -selves.
- Srpsko „se“ nije uvek -self
- Mnogi glagoli imaju „se“ u srpskom, a u engleskom nemaju povratnu zamenicu: „I feel tired.“ (Osećam se umorno.), „Relax!“ (Opusti se!), „We met at six.“ (Sreli smo se u šest.), „I remember that day.“ (Sećam se tog dana.), „Get dressed!“ (Obuci se!).
