Namerne rečenice — to, in order to, so that
Kako kažemo zašto neko nešto radi: to + glagol, in order to i so as to (malo formalnije), so that + rečenica (često sa can / could, will / would); odrično so as not to, in order not to, so that … don't / won't; for + imenica, ali to + glagol (ne „for buy“); kratak odgovor na Why? (To buy …).

- Najčešće kažemo zašto neko nešto radi pomoću to + glagol: „I went to the bakery to buy some rolls.“, „Mila called to wish me a happy birthday.“
- In order to i so as to
- Isto značenje, malo formalnije: „We got up at five in order to see the sunrise.“, „The museum closes early on Mondays so as to clean the halls.“
- So that + rečenica
- Kad posle sledi rečenica sa svojim subjektom, kažemo so that, često sa can / will (sadašnjost i budućnost) ili could / would (prošlost): „We sat in the front row so that we could see the stage.“, „I'll leave the door open so that the cat can come in.“
- For + imenica, to + glagol
- „I went out for a walk.“ (imenica) — „I went out to walk the dog.“ (glagol). Ne kaže se „for walk the dog“ ni „for to walk“.
- Odrično
- „We spoke quietly so as not to wake Grandpa.“, „Wear a hat so that you don't get cold.“, „I made a list so that I wouldn't forget anything.“
- Kratak odgovor na Why?
- „Why are you saving money?“ — „To buy a new bike.“ (samo to + glagol).
