Was i were — prošlo vreme glagola be: „Am“ i „is“ u prošlom vremenu postaju „was“, a „are“ postaje „were“: „I was at home.“ (Bio sam / bila sam kod kuće.), „She was happy.“, „We were in Subotica.“, „The shops were open.“ Uz I, he, she, it i jedninu: was; uz you, we, they i množinu: were.
Kada? yesterday, last …: Uz prošlo vreme često stoje: „yesterday“ (juče), „last night“ (sinoć), „last week“ (prošle nedelje), „last summer“, „on Monday“: „It was windy yesterday.“, „They were in Greece last summer.“
Odrični oblik: wasn't, weren't: „Was not“ = „wasn't“, „were not“ = „weren't“: „I wasn't hungry.“, „The bus wasn't late.“, „My friends weren't at the party.“
Pitanja i kratki odgovori: Was / were ide ispred subjekta: „Was your brother in the kitchen?“ — „Yes, he was.“ / „No, he wasn't.“, „Were you thirsty?“ — „Yes, I was.“ (pazi: you → I). Sa upitnom rečju: „Where were you last night?“ — „I was at the cinema.“
There was, there were: „There is“ u prošlom vremenu postaje „there was“, a „there are“ postaje „there were“: „There was a big tree in our yard.“, „There were three dogs in the park.“ U odričnoj rečenici: „There wasn't a lift.“, „There weren't any shelves.“ Pitanja: „Was there a party?“ — „Yes, there was.“, „Were there any apples in the bowl?“ — „No, there weren't.“ / „Yes, there were.“
Danas i juče: „Today I'm at home. Yesterday I was at the pool.“ — „Today the streets are wet. Yesterday they were dry.“ Glagol be u prošlosti ne koristi did: kaže se „Were you there?“, a ne „Did you be there?“
